Digging a Hole
- May 6
- 1 min read
First rain of the Summer
Comes louder, now, than thunder
I start to dig this hole
While ducks scatter away
(Raindrops fall down
To wash it all away)
And
It is
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
Taking to my digging
With a rusty spade and shovel
The right spot for the pond
By the eyes of the headless maidens
(and the dirt peels back
Like rinds of oranges)
And
It is
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
I’m proud to say
I’ve been paid in saffron cake
And family calling in
Is often greater than him and me
(and he had to leave
Like the mysteries of the sea)
And
It is
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
So I found this out
As the day had come and left me
That could-be-wanton silence
Is gold
As Nero’s home is
(Even the best intended tales
Can only lay our hearts in stone)
And
It is
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
I hope she knows my soul
Didn’t depart for nether realms
Or highlands
It was there just all alone
While she built the pyre around
(in the rain.)
And
It is
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
It’s just
Another man down
I’ll just keep on digging ‘cause I know I’m getting deeper
That day that he slept-in
You can light your match upon
(Now I think this pond
Would be better left unfound)
(in the rain…)
